Crispy Salt Crackers & Savory Salt Cookies

Crispy Salt Crackers & Savory Salt Cookies (Egg-Free & Butter-Free)

Looking for a savory snack that’s light, crunchy, and made with simple pantry staples? These salt crackers and cookies are completely egg-free and butter-free—perfect for snacking on their own, pairing with dips, or serving with cheese. Whether you like them super crisp like crackers or slightly softer like cookies, this flexible recipe has you covered.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or substitute with whole wheat flour for a healthier twist)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (plus more coarse salt for topping, optional)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder (optional, for a slight lift)
  • ¼ cup olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • ¾ to 1 cup water (adjust to consistency)

Instructions

1. Mix the Dough

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder (if using).
  2. Pour in the olive oil and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add water, stirring constantly, until a soft, pliable dough forms. Add water slowly to avoid over-hydrating the dough.

2. Roll and Cut

  1. Divide the dough into two pieces. On a floured surface, roll each piece thin—about ⅛ inch thick for crackers, or slightly thicker for softer cookies.
  2. Cut into desired shapes: squares, rounds, or fun shapes with cookie cutters.
  3. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking tray, spacing them slightly apart.

3. Prick and Season

  1. Use a fork to prick holes into each piece to prevent puffing during baking.
  2. Optionally, sprinkle with coarse salt for extra flavor.

4. Bake

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp around the edges.
  3. Let cool completely—they’ll continue to crisp up as they cool.

Serving Tips

  • Serve with hummus, cheese spreads, or soups.
  • Add herbs or spices (like rosemary, garlic powder, or paprika) to the dough for variety.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
