After the Accident, She Remained in a Coma for Five Years… Then She Opened Her Eyes and Saw Her Husband in Tears — Part 2

The first thing Emma Caldwell heard was a man crying.

The sound came in broken, breathless gasps from the chair beside her hospital bed.

She tried to open her eyes, but even that felt impossible. Her body was heavy. Her thoughts were scattered, buried beneath a thick fog she couldn’t understand.

Then she heard the voice again.

“Emma…”

The voice sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

She slowly opened her eyes.

A bright ceiling came into focus. White walls. Medical equipment. A monitor beeping steadily beside her.

And then she saw him.

Daniel.

Her husband.

But something was wrong.

He looked older.

His dark hair was streaked with gray, and deep lines had appeared around his eyes. His face looked exhausted, as if he hadn’t slept properly in years.

Daniel reached for her hand with trembling fingers.

“Emma,” he whispered. “Oh God… Emma, you’re awake.”

A tear rolled down his cheek.

Emma stared at him in confusion.

“Why… are you crying?”

Daniel covered his face for a moment.

“Because I thought I’d lost you forever.”

Before Emma could answer, the door opened.

A nurse rushed inside, followed by two doctors.

“Can you hear us?” one of the doctors asked.

Emma blinked.

“Can you squeeze my hand?”

She tried.

Her fingers moved.

The doctor smiled.

“Good. Very good.”

They asked her to follow a finger with her eyes, move her toes, and answer simple questions.

Everything felt strangely difficult.

Then Emma looked toward Daniel.

“How long…?”

The doctor exchanged a quick glance with the nurse.

Emma frowned.

“How long have I been here?”

Nobody answered.

Her heart began beating faster.

“Please,” she whispered. “Tell me.”

Daniel grabbed her hand.

“It’s okay, Emma.”

She pulled her hand away.

“Tell me!”

The doctor finally spoke.

“You’ve been unconscious for a very long time.”

“How long?”

Silence.

“Five years.”

Emma stared at him.

Five years?

She looked at Daniel again.

“That can’t be true.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“It is.”

Emma’s mind began racing.

The last thing she remembered was driving through heavy rain.

She remembered Daniel sitting behind the wheel.

She remembered his phone lighting up.

A message.

A woman’s name.

Lauren.

Then Daniel looking down at the screen.

Emma telling him to watch the road.

The sudden turn.

The headlights.

The sound of metal crushing.

And then…

Nothing.

Emma’s breathing became faster.

“I remember…”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Don’t force yourself.”

“I remember the accident.”

The doctor immediately moved closer.

“That’s enough for today.”

But Emma continued.

“You were driving.”

Daniel froze.

The room became completely silent.

Emma looked into his eyes.

“You were driving the car.”

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Emma…”

“You were looking at your phone.”

“Please stop.”

“There was a message.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“A woman’s name.”

The nurse looked at Daniel.

Emma whispered:

“Lauren.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Emma, you don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

A doctor asked Daniel to leave the room so Emma could remain calm.

Daniel refused.

“I’ve been here for her every day!”

His voice echoed through the room.

“I never abandoned her!”

Security eventually escorted him into the hallway.

Emma watched him disappear.

But something about his reaction disturbed her.

She turned toward the nurse.

“Why was he so afraid?”

The nurse didn’t answer.

Emma noticed it immediately.

The woman was avoiding her eyes.

“Please,” Emma said softly. “Tell me the truth.”

The nurse sighed.

“There are things you need to know.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“What things?”

The nurse glanced toward the closed door.

“Your husband told everyone that you caused the accident.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

“What?”

“He said you had been drinking.”

“That isn’t true.”

“I know.”

Emma stared at her.

“You know?”

The nurse hesitated.

“I wasn’t working here when the accident happened. But I read your medical file.”

Emma swallowed.

“What does it say?”

The nurse lowered her voice.

“There were no alcohol findings in your initial medical tests.”

Emma’s heart stopped for a moment.

“Then why would he say I was drunk?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma looked toward the hallway.

Daniel had spent five years telling everyone she was responsible.

Five years while she lay unconscious.

Five years while he built a story that made him innocent.

But there was something else.

Something the nurse hadn’t told her.

Emma noticed a folder lying on the table.

“What is that?”

The nurse looked at it.

“Your belongings from the accident.”

Emma’s eyes locked onto the folder.

“My belongings?”

The nurse nodded.

“Most of them were damaged, but some items survived.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were photographs, hospital documents, and a small plastic evidence bag.

Emma stared at it.

Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.

A phone.

Her phone.

The screen was cracked, but it was still recognizable.

“Can I see it?”

The nurse hesitated.

“I don’t think you should—”

“Please.”

The nurse handed it to her.

Emma’s hands trembled as she looked at the screen.

The phone had been damaged for five years, but the evidence from the accident had been preserved.

Then Emma noticed something.

There was a message that had never been deleted.

A message sent just three minutes before the crash.

From Lauren.

Emma’s eyes widened.

She opened it.

The message contained only six words:

“He told me you already knew.”

Emma stopped breathing.

Who was Lauren?

And what exactly had Daniel told her?

Then another notification appeared beneath it.

One that Emma had never seen before.

A message from Daniel.

Sent only thirty seconds before the accident.

Emma read it once.

Then again.

Her hands began shaking.

Because the message said:

“If she finds out, we’re both finished.”

Emma slowly looked at the nurse.

“Call the police.”

The nurse stared at her.

“Why?”

Emma tightened her grip around the phone.

“Because my husband didn’t cause an accident.”

She swallowed hard.

“He caused something else.”

And now that Emma was awake, the secret he’d buried for five years was finally about to come back to life…
