With simple pantry ingredients and an effortless kneading method, this recipe guarantees consistently perfect rolls every time.
Ingredients
- 325 g all-purpose or bread flour (about 2 1/2 cups, loosely packed)
- 50 g unsalted butter (about 3 1/2 tablespoons), softened
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 150 ml warm milk (about 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons)
- 30 g sugar (about 2 1/2 tablespoons)
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon instant or active dry yeast
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Add the egg and softened butter, then mix to combine. Add the flour and salt and stir with a spatula or wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
2. Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface. Knead by hand for about 8–10 minutes, or until the dough becomes soft, smooth, and elastic.
A well-kneaded dough should pass the windowpane test: take a small piece of dough and gently stretch it—if it forms a thin, translucent film without tearing, it’s ready.
3. Shape the Rolls
Roll the dough into a log and divide it into equal portions. Working with one piece at a time, flatten slightly, fold the edges toward the center, and shape into a smooth ball. Place each dough ball into a parchment-lined baking dish, spacing them slightly apart.
4. First Rise
Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and let the rolls rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Prepare for Baking
Once risen, optionally brush the tops with a light egg wash to promote a glossy, golden finish.
6. Bake
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the baking dish on the lowest rack of the oven and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the rolls are lightly golden on top.
7. Cool and Serve
Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly in the pan before serving. They are best enjoyed warm, fresh from the oven.
