Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

This Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy is a hearty, homestyle dish that features juicy beef patties smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy. It’s a comforting meal perfect for weeknights or when you want something warm and satisfying.

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80–85% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup grated onion
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, grated onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 equal oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil. Sear the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

2. Prepare the Mushroom Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add olive oil and butter. Once melted, add mushrooms and cook for 4–5 minutes until browned.
  2. Add chopped onion and garlic; cook another 2–3 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate the raw taste.
  4. Gradually pour in beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer.
  5. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and stir in fresh parsley.

3. Combine and Serve:

  1. Return the steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them and let everything simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  2. Garnish with extra parsley and serve hot.
