Greek Chicken Gyros
Tender, juicy chicken wrapped in warm pita and topped with creamy homemade tzatziki, crisp veggies, and tangy feta—this Greek street-food favorite makes a perfect lunch or dinner.
Ingredients:
For the Chicken Marinade:
- 1 lb (450g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 cucumber, grated and excess water squeezed out
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
For Serving:
- 4–6 soft pita breads, warmed
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- ½ cup cucumber slices
- ½ cup crumbled feta cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Optional: Kalamata olives, lemon wedges
Instructions:
1. Marinate the Chicken:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, vinegar, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.
Add the chicken slices and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (1–2 hours for best flavor).
2. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:
In a separate bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, dill, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Cover and chill in the fridge while the chicken marinates.
3. Cook the Chicken:
Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
Add the marinated chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden, cooked through, and slightly charred at the edges. Remove from heat.
4. Assemble the Gyros:
Warm the pita breads in a skillet or oven.
Spread each with a generous layer of tzatziki.
Top with chicken, red onion, tomatoes, cucumber slices, and feta.
Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve immediately.
Notes:
- For a more authentic touch: Add a few Kalamata olives or a sprinkle of sumac.
- Serving tip: These gyros pair well with a side of crispy fries or a simple Greek salad.
- Meal prep-friendly: Store the marinated chicken and tzatziki separately for easy weekday lunches.
