Soft and Fluffy Raisin Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for a chewier texture)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup raisins (regular or golden)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional, for a warm flavor boost)
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, a pinch of sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, egg, and softened butter. Mix until the dough begins to come together. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Gently fold in the raisins until evenly distributed.
3. First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the Dough
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Transfer to a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
5. Second Rise
Cover and let rise again for about 45 minutes, or until puffy and nearly doubled.
6. Bake the Bread
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaf for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
7. Cool and Slice
Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Tips for Best Results
- Soak raisins in warm water for 10 minutes and drain well before using to keep them moist and plump in the bread.
- Brush the top of the loaf with milk before baking to promote a soft, golden crust.
- Bread flour yields a chewier texture, while all-purpose flour makes a lighter, softer loaf.
- Add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla for added depth of flavor.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or freeze slices for longer storage.
